When you apply for a working capital advance, business line of credit, or alternative term loan, the document that matters most is your bank statements. Specifically, the last 3–6 months of deposits and withdrawals in your primary business checking account.
What Underwriters Are Looking For
Average monthly deposits: This is the most important number. Underwriters calculate your average monthly deposits over the past 3–6 months. Most alternative lenders will advance 50–150% of your average monthly deposits depending on the product and overall profile.
Deposit consistency: Ten deposits per month of roughly equal size looks much better than one large deposit followed by nothing for three weeks. Consistent deposits signal a stable business with predictable cash flow.
Negative days: Any day your account balance goes to zero or below. Underwriters count these. Zero negative days is ideal. Frequent negative days — especially in consecutive months — is a significant red flag.
NSF items: Bounced transactions or NSF fees are underwriting red flags. A single NSF in six months may be overlooked; multiple NSFs suggest the account is being managed close to the edge.
Existing loan payments: Underwriters can often identify existing loan payments by looking at daily ACH debits of consistent amounts. They'll calculate your "net deposits" — what's left after existing payments — to determine what additional repayment you can support.
How to Improve Your Bank Statements Before Applying
- Eliminate overdrafts entirely. Set a minimum balance alert and treat it as your floor.
- Consolidate deposits into your primary account — deposits in a secondary account are invisible to underwriters.
- Avoid large unexplained withdrawals right before applying.
When to Apply
Apply when your most recent 3 months look their best. The most recent months carry the most weight in underwriting. If you had a strong Q4 and a slower January, wait until February and March deposits are in before applying in April.
